Scholarships and College Planning for Girl Scouts

Staying in Girl Scouts can help you build your college resume and improves your eligibility for many scholarships. Activities done through Girl Scouts (not just by earning your Gold Award) can be the foundation when applying for many scholarships.

Scholarships

Scholarships are available on multiple levels within Girl Scouts. Our neighborhood sponsors a grant for service and the council offers scholarships to Gold Award recipients.

Applications for council scholarships are sent to all girls after they have earned their Gold Award.  Council has also compiled a list of scholarships available to all girls here.

Nationwide, hundreds of schools and organizations offer scholarships to Girl Scouts.  There is a searchable list on the GSUSA website.

ASU and U of A
  • ASU College of Engineering - girls must be accepted to ASU and can apply through their scholarship portal
  • U of A or ASU Honors Colleges - girls must be accepted to an applicable Honors College and apply through the respective schools' scholarship portal
Assistance with College Planning

Girl Scouts also provides free access to CollegeLab is offering free access to registered Girl Scouts who have met one or more of the following requirements:
  • Earned (or currently earning) the College Knowledge badge
  • Secured council approval of their Gold Award proposal
  • Earned the Girl Scout Gold Award

We are excited to offer some great ways for our Cadette, Senior, and Ambassador Girl Scouts to be part of the Girl Scout leadership and service team!

This is a great way to give service and build your leadership skills while helping make Girl Scouts strong.

Please fill out the form to let us know your interests.

Service team

There are at-large positions available on the service team. We expect you to attend monthlyleader meetings (evenings) and use your voice.  We encourage you to consider one of the following teams.

Community Service Team

The community service team will plan and carry out or work with troops carrying out neighborhood-wide service projects.   Projects are monthly.   Team meetings will be a couple of times a year, plus emails and working via Google spreadsheet. Find out more here.

STEM Team

Fall Product Sale Information 2020

The Fall Product Sale is coming soon, beginning October 1.  This is a great way to earn money for your troop and for the girls to start setting goals and reaching them!  Your troop can earn $1-$2 per product.  If your troop sells $600 of Fall Products by 10/26, you will earn an early Cookie Booth selection!

Your customers can purchase delicious snacks, nuts, and chocolate.  These make great holiday gifts.  Favorite include Fruit Slices, Thin Mint Almonds, and Dark Chocolate Mint Penguins.  New this year: Peanut Butter Trail Mix.  There are even more options online which can be direct shipped to customers.

Training and Program Packets

If your troop is participating, please have the Fall Product Manager (or troop leader) complete the online training.  Beginning Friday Aug. 21, Fall Product managers and leaders can go through the online training on GSLearn, and at the end you will electronically sign a TPM agreement which gives you access to the online ordering system, M2.  The online system is new this year but the products are still coming from Ashdon Farms.
  • Come pick up your packets from my porch.  They are in large white envelopes labeled with a number indicating how many packets are inside.  Pick up as many as you need to cover the number of girls in your troop.
  • Visit this website and select Troop Leader - 2020 Fall Product Training on GS Learn https://www.girlscoutsaz.org/en/cookies/fall-product-program/program-resources.html

  • Go through the “Managing the 2020 Fall Product Program” training.
  • Fill out the 2020 TPM Agreement.
  • You can access the M2 system on September 24 once you receive your launch email.  Take some time to familiarize yourself with the site before the sale starts on 10/1 and parents & girls can log in.

Pima Book Clubs

Pima is going to try something new (again).

Book Clubs!
To make this happen, I need a volunteer at each level (Brownie through Ambassador) to offer to lead the group.  This lead will facilitate book selection and set up zoom meetings.  I think a goal of one meeting for an hour every two months is reasonable.

Please let me know if you are interested in leading a level.  I think the lead role will be mostly organizational at the upper levels; girls should be leading these groups after we get started in the Cadette/Senior/Ambassador levels.

Update

Daisy Lead: Tiffany (Adult chaperone: Diana)
The Daisy book club will be story time with an art project.

Brownie Lead: Amiya (Adult lead: Kelley Hurley)
Junior Leads:  Ella and Sarah (Adult chaperone: Diana)
Cadette Lead: (adult/girl combo would be good here)
Senior Lead: Ashley Banghart (girl lead) (Adult lead: Cinnamon Conrad)
Ambassador Lead: Abby and Ella (Adult chaperone: Diana)
Adult Lead:

Here is a list of books that were suggested we read in groups. If you have other title ideas, email them to me and I will update this list.

Brownies: Little House on the Prairie, Brownie Mystery Books, Mercy Watson, Roscoe Riley
Juniors
Cadettes: My Path to the Stars, Skyward
Seniors: Animal Farm, To Kill a Mockingbird
Ambassadors: Educated by Tara Westover
Adults: How the Girl Guides Won the War, Between Shades of Gray

The Scottsdale library also offers these titles for book clubs to check out.

https://www.scottsdalelibrary.org/Assets/ScottsdaleLibrary/documents/PDF/Book-Club-to-Go-list.pdf

This is potentially the best route to go but I will leave that to each level to decide.  Level leaders likely would need to check the book box out and arrange for girls/adults to pick up the titles. As always, my house in an option for pick ups and returns.

In a Corona-Quandary? Start here.

Monthly Service Projects in Pima!

NEW this Year: Monthly Service Projects for All Ages!

One of our goals this year is to provide our Neighborhood with more opportunities to give back to our community. Participating in a variety of community service events will help our girls understand what it really means to live by the Girl Scout Law, whether it's by using (and re-using) resources wisely or making the world a better place!

September: Cards for Covid Fighters
For September's service project, Pima Neighborhood Girl Scouts will create cards thanking front line workers who are faced with COVID-19 daily, including hospital workers, firefighters, and grocery store employees. We will host a Zoom meeting for girls to make and share cards together on September 13 at 2pm, but feel free to participate even if you can't attend the event. Details: http://pimaneighborhood.blogspot.com/2020/08/september-service-project-cards-for.html

October: Birthday Bags & Toy Drive
In October, we'll celebrate our Girl Scout founder's birthday by filling birthday bags and collecting toys for Arizona Helping Hands. We will host a Zoom meeting for girls to decorate and fill their gift bags, and also spend time celebrating Juliette Gordon Low with some extra special birthday fun. http://pimaneighborhood.blogspot.com/2020/09/october-community-service-birthday-bags.html

November: Cards for Veterans
This service project is in honor of our country's Veterans. We will host a Zoom meeting for girls to make cards together and learn about Operation Gratitude, an organization that shares cards and care packages with deployed troops, Veterans, and first responders.

December: Caroling
During the month of December, we'll be getting creative with caroling for seniors in our community. Depending on local health recommendations, this could include social distanced caroling outside senior living facilities, recorded and emailed songs for seniors, or other options.

December: Adopt a Family
The Pima Neighborhood Girl Scouts have been participating in this service project for over 20 years with the City of Scottsdale's Adopt-a-Family program. Some years, we have adopted a Senior. For each participant, we purchase at least three gifts of around $100 in value and a $30 gift certificate to a grocery store to help provide the holiday meal.

January: Canned Food Drive
After the holidays is the perfect time to clean out your pantry and share your extra non-perishable food items. This year, we'll be collecting canned food for the Navajo nation who was hit especially hard by COVID-19 during 2020.

February: The Jared Box Project
In February, we'll celebrate Valentine's Day by filling boxes with small toys and activities for kids at local hospitals.  https://pimaneighborhood.blogspot.com/2020/09/february-service-project-jareds-boxes.html

March: Treasures for Teachers
During the month of March, Girl Scouts and their families can clean out their closets and set aside donations of educational toys, books, games, supplies, and small furniture to donate to the Treasures for Teachers Thrift Shop in Tempe.

April: Community Improvement Day
In honor of Earth Day, the Pima Neighborhood will be hosting a community improvement day. Girls will work together to come up with ideas on how to make our world a better place, including trash clean up, gardening, planting, and more.

May: DIY Toys for Animal Shelters
Girl Scouts from Troop 2010 will guide the Pima Neighborhood in creating twisted t-shirt dog toys, sock toys for cats, and cookie box homes for bunnies. These will be gifted to one or more local animal shelters.

Specific details will be released in the weeks leading up to each event. Even if you can't attend the event, we welcome you to participate individually or with your troop. We'll be sending out details that you can follow, with or without attending the event.

Pima Neighborhood Girl Scouts of all ages are invited to join in on each activity.

We can't wait to give back to our community together!

September Service Project: Cards for Covid-19 Fighters

Appreciate the front-line workers!

For September’s service project, Pima Neighborhood Girl Scouts will create cards thanking the front line workers like hospital workers, firefighters, and grocery store workers who are faced with COVID-19 daily. We are asking each girl to make two handmade thank-you cards, but girls who make five or more will receive a patch for their dedication!

Materials needed:  Blank cards or blank paper, pens, markers, colored pencils, stickers or other decor.

Instructions:  Write a short message or “thank you for all your work” or even “Thank you!”  Decorate card.  For safety, girls should omit last names and personal information from cards.

On September 13th at 2pm, we will host a zoom meeting for girls to come to make cards together. The zoom meeting is not mandatory, but if the girls want to share their cards and ideas, they are highly encouraged to come!

Zoom Card Making Party:  September 13th @ 2pm

By October 7th, order patches for girls who made 5+ cards with this form:

The last day to turn in cards will be September 30th.
Drop off your cards at Diana’s so we can bundle them and send them
to the first responders.

Drop-off Location:
Diana’s House

Or Mail Cards to:
Lee, c/o RSI,
PO Box 22400,
