Food Drive for Scottsdale Residents in Need


Item Collection For Vista del Camino

During these hard times, even more, we have to support those in need. Scottsdale’s Vista del Camino Food Bank is in need of the following items, and for the month of October, Troop 2010 will be collecting them for a bulk donation.

Items 
  • Peanut butter
  • Canned protein (chicken, tuna)
  • Canned ravioli
  • Canned fruits (no sugar added or packed in 100% fruit juice)
  • Canned vegetables
  • Dry or canned beans,
  • Cereal and boxed prepared meals, such as mac and cheese and Hamburger Helper.
Various toiletries are also needed: toilet paper, paper towels, deodorant, shampoo, dental hygiene products.

p-off locations for donations will be at volunteer’s houses from Troop 2010. Please check email for addresses.

Attend the National Convention!

This is the first time that any member of Girl Scouts can register to attend the National Council Session, without having to travel, so take advantage of it!

Here is the schedule, so you can see which blocks you might want to attend. 

The Friday opening will be exciting, and Saturday morning has the Girl Speak Out moment! Sunday closing will feature our new Board, and all the sessions will have interesting debates about issues that you can watch. 

Hope to “see” you there!  This is a great "preview" for anyone who might want to apply to be a delegate in 2023!

The Road to College

Please join us on November 8th from 1-3 pm for The Road to College



Students from Alpha Phi Omega (APO) at Washington University in St. Louis will join Girl Scouts on Zoom to give a brief presentation about the college application process and life as a college student. 





APO is a co-ed fraternity that focuses on leadership, friendship, and service. Members come from all four years and diverse backgrounds, so there will be a variety of viewpoints and experiences to share. Members of APO will also help lead some thought exercises, group discussions, and stick around for a Q&A session afterwards.

We know how scary the college process can be, we have all been there and come out the other side! It can be helpful to talk to real people who have recently made such a big transition and we hope to make the process a little easier by providing the knowledge and tools necessary for success.

Senior/Ambassador Book Club


The Ambassador Book Club will meet once a month via Zoom and will be led by Ambassadors Abby and Ella!

Our first meeting is Saturday, September 26th from 3-4pm. We will go over the books we have planned for the year, but we are open to suggestions so come prepared! 

Our first book is The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde, which will discuss at November 21, at 3 pm!

Adopt-a-Family

Thank you for your support for our annual Adopt-a-Family project! Pima has been doing this project for 20+ years and generally adopts 50-75 Scottsdale children each holiday season.


The Adopt-a-Family event is a partnership between City of Scottsdale and Scottsdale Community Partners, the non-profit philanthropy arm of COS. Families are interviewed by social workers, who record children’s requests for three gifts for the holiday as well as clothing and shoe sizes. Susan matches up adopters and adoptees and emails assignments and full information in early November. Every effort is made to match troops with a child near their age.

Then, we purchase at least three gifts of around $100 in total value for each recipient based on their wish list. We also provide a gift certificate for $30 to the family’s grocery store to help provide a holiday meal. Troops frequently supplement the three main gifts with clothing, stocking stuffers, or other items, and sometimes also include a small gift for the mom or parents. Many troops also include gift wrap, bows, and tape for the families to wrap the gifts with. All gifts are dropped off and delivered to the families unwrapped, so the parents can have the pleasure and dignity of wrapping their own children’s gift.

We drop off a donor report and all the gifts, bagged and labelled for each recipient at Holly’s place in early December and she takes them over to Vista del Camino. Thank you for making a child's holiday special!

February Service Project: Jared's Boxes


Troops 2256 and 4727 invite Pima to send some love to hospitalized children at the Honor Healthcare Shea right here in our neighborhood during the month of February. We are sending out the call NOW because we believe there will opportunities for discounted items over the next months (Black Friday? after holiday sales?) to maximize our efforts.

WHAT IS A JARED BOX?

A Jared Box is a shoe box full of small toys and activities that are given to children who are hospitalized. The goal of the Jared Box Project is to lift the spirits of children in the hospital. Boxes filled with the "gift of play" are given to young patients in emergency rooms, hospital rooms, surgical centers, and clinics.

The boxes symbolize the importance of play and are filled with well wishes, hope, and love.  

HOW TO PARTICIPATE

There are a number of avenues you can choose to participate depending on your desired level of participation.  Please fill in this link to report your participation and receive your patches.

Families or troops assemble full boxes by following the directions here. This video shows you how to complete a full box.  





RULES

Because these boxes are going to sick children, all items must be new. No food items. No tiny items due to choking hazards. No snow globes or glass items that can break. No pencil sharpeners. No bubbles. No holiday items. Keep in mind, toys need to fit into a plastic shoe box.

WHEN

Please deliver all completed boxes to Diana by Thinking Day (February 22).  If we have an in-person Thinking Day event (and we hope that happens!), you can bring them to that event on February 21.

First Aid Courses in Pima!!


Pima Neighborhood is offering First Aid/CPR classes to troop leaders and, if seats are available, other troop parents and Girl Scouts in 6th thru 12th grade may sign up.  In order to reserve a spot, you must sign up on this Google Doc and pay $40 per person in advance.  Please register by October 5. Check your email for payment options.

The location will be announced later, but it will be an outdoor venue, possibly a park ramada or the patio of a home. Masks will be required for the entire duration of the class.

 

The class will start promptly at 6 PM and will be over around 9:30 PM. Attendees should arrive 5 minutes early so that we can start on time. 

 

You have four dates to choose from, and when you register you will rank the dates in order of preference.  Because the instructor requires a minimum of 8 to hold the class, and GSACPC limits the class size to a maximum of 9 students, we are going to work hard to accommodate as many leaders as can be safely trained.  Please understand that everyone signing up needs to be as flexible as possible about the date of attendance.

As we watch the cases of COVID-19 decreasing across our state, we are meeting the gating criteria set by the CDC that will allow us to move into Phase One of our re-opening plan beginning on Monday, Sept. 14.

In Phase One, gatherings of 10 people or less will be permitted if the protocols of social distancing and wearing masks are followed. 

However, holding in-person meetings are at the discretion of the Troop Leaders and parents, depending on their comfort level regarding the risks associated with small group gatherings. Virtual meetings may continue to take place. During Phase One, in-home meetings are not recommended, and carpooling and overnight stays are not allowed.

Zoom Accounts Available


We are excited to announce that GSUSA has worked out a partnership with Zoom that allows for Troops to purchase a one year license for $36! These Zoom accounts allow up to 500 participants for an unlimited meeting time. You will also have the ability to use the breakout room functionality. All meetings are set to automatically have a wait room and password, and that functionality will not be able to be turned off.

If you are interested in purchasing a Zoom license for your Troop, please fill out the linked form. We will start assigning licenses early next week.

October Community Service: Birthday Bags & Toy Drive


Arizona Helping Hands provides essential needs for children in foster care. https://azhelpinghands.org The organization receives more than 300 requests a month for birthday bags. As Girl Scouts celebrate Juliette Low’s birthday (October 31st 1860) let’s make a birthday special for a child in need.  


Reminder: many of these items can be found at the dollar store. If you would like to also add small gifts to the bags, they are particularly in need of gifts for tweens and teens. We will host a Zoom call to decorate bags and assemble on Sunday October 18th at 2 p.m. You can organize the bags with your troop at your convenience. The Zoom call is optional but is a fun way to interact with other troops.
