PIMA COMMUNITY SERVICE DAY

Join us for our 2022 Community Service Day, Sunday, Feb 13th at Scottsdale Ranch Park. The event goes from 1-3 pm, but show up around 12:45 if your troop is bringing a project. This is a wonderful time for troops working on their Bronze, Silver, or Gold Award projects to bring their ideas to our community! We are hoping to have 10 to 15 projects so all ideas are welcome.  If you'd like to host a project and need project ideas, let us know.

Summer Day Camp 2022

REGISTRATION CLOSES 5/31/22

What is Summer Day Camp?

An awesome, week-long summer day camp. The theme this year is

Time
Traveler.

Daily activities include swaps & crafts, science, dance, music, and sports. Our day camp fills up fast because it's so fun, so register as soon as registration opens!

Day Camp is planned and organized by Girl Scout Troops 2256, a multi-level Girl Scout troop from Pima Neighborhood (part of Girl Scouts―Arizona Cactus-Pine Council, Inc.). Camp activities are led by volunteer Cadette, Senior, and Ambassador Girl Scouts and supervised by adult volunteers.

When?

We have  scheduled camp for for July 11-15 (Monday-Friday), 9 am-2 pm daily.  Girls can be dropped off starting at 8:45 each day so that they camp day can start promptly at 9 am.

Where?

Girl Scout Camp will be held at Notre Dame Preparatory.

Who Can Attend?

Day Camp is limited to 100 campers who are registered in a Pima neighborhood troop (Daisy, Brownie, and Junior Girl Scouts, who have just completed K-5 grades in May). An independent girl member living in our area may also attend. Our staff will be 20 older girl volunteers (grades 8+) and at least 20 adult volunteers (18+ years).

If your daughter is in a troop outside of the Pima Neighborhood, she may attend day camp but you must be a registered and background checked volunteer who is willing to volunteer for at least two days to assist us in meeting girl/adult ratio. Cost for out-of-neighborhood Girl Scouts is $150 and registration begins May 1st for non-Pima girls.

**Girls must have current membership with Girl Scouts.**

Girls living in the Desert Mountain High School complex or who attend Pinnacle Peak, Sonoran Sky, or Grayhawk elementary schools who are not Girl Scout members may also attend but will be required to join Girl Scouts. Membership is $25 and girls need not join a troop (although we are happy to assist you in finding a permanent Girl Scout home).

Program Aide Program for Grades 6+

Girl Scouts who have just completed grades 6-9 may register for a special older girl program.  This program is designed to give them the leadership skills to be camp counselors and to assist with other neighborhood programs.  Girls who enroll in this program will earn their Program Aide award during the week.  This program is limited to the first 20 registrants.  If your daughter is just completing 5th grade, she may opt to be a camper or for this new PA program.  Please think about the choice carefully; a very mature 5th grader will do fine in this program but many girls this age will "fit" better in the regular camp program.

What is the Cost?

$100 per girl for Pima campers who register and pay before May 1st.  $150 after May 1st.

Please take note of the late fee.  If you do not pay your camp fee before May 1st, the cost is $150.

All registrations, fees, and paperwork need to be remitted by June 1st to ensure your daughter has a spot at camp.

We need adult volunteers who are registered/background checked members of GSUSA.  To guarantee a spot for your camper, agree to help as an adult volunteer!  (Adult volunteer link is here.)

How Do I Register?

Re
gister here.

Could Camp Be Cancelled?

We used to guarantee camp would happen, but the advent of COVID-19 in our world has changed all the rules.  We do not anticipate a cancellation because of the pandemic but we do reserve the right to limit camp numbers or cancel in the event that we do not get enough adult volunteers to meet our safety ratios.

If cancelled, all campers will be notified and registration fees refunded. You can help us out by giving us a day or two of your time! (Adult volunteer link is here.)

What Does my Girl Scout Need to Bring?

Everyone should bring their own sack lunch Monday through Friday. Everyone should also bring a bottle of water each day.  Refrigerators and microwaves are not available.

Girls need to wear closed-toe shoes and we encourage girls to according to the theme each day.

The themes for the week are as follows:

  • Monday: Prehistoric Times
  • Tuesday:  Ancient Civilizations
  • Wednesday: Renaissance
  • Thursday: Revolutionary Era: the 18th and 19th centuries
  • Friday: The Future

Drop Off, Pick Up, and Safety

We will strive to meet every Girl Scout safety recommendation.  All girls must be signed in and out by a parent/guardian each day.  If she is going home with someone else, we must receive a note from the parent.  Please pick up your camper on time.  No supervision will be provided before 8:45 or after 2:15 pm.

Brownie Book Club

Update - this meeting has been moved to Virtual on zoom. With Holidays approaching, I want to err on the side of caution.

I am excited for us to have our next virtual Brownie Book Club on Saturday, November 20 at 3pm. We will be finishing the first book in our Sister Grimm series - The Fairytale Detectives! During our last meeting, we talked about fractured fairytales and how you can write your own fractured fairytale. The girls expressed interest in writing their own books, so I will be planning some activities to create our own books. Excited to continue our reading journey!

If you want to join the fun, sign up via the Book Club interest form.  Once you are signed up, you will receive the Zoom link.

Pima Neighborhood Service and Leadership Shirts

Pima has been ordering neighborhood  shirts for many years.  The back of the shirt is sort of a history lesson in all the activities that have been planned and hosted or enjoyed by older girl troops and groups in the neighborhood.

It changes to reflect the numbers of the current troops that have girls in grades 6-12 and are, therefore, considered what we used to call the Super Troop but we now call the service and leadership team.   All girls in these grades are welcome and encouraged to participate in the many volunteer opportunities we have to run events in Pima or to choose an event of their own to host. If you are an adult volunteer, you are also automatically a part of this team.

The shirts became a "thing" one year when we watched the various troops group themselves at a cookie rally based on their troop or cookie shirts.  We could visually see that the girls weren't crossing troop boundaries and we thought that designing a shirt that we could all wear to emphasize that we are all on one team. Without hard evidence, it does appear that the strategy worked; we have many girls making friends across the neighborhood!

We have a new design out in 2021 and we are devising an "on-demand" system to order shirts so it's time to let us know if you want a new shirt!  Older girl troops will be receiving a survey asking how many or each size they may want and we'll be sending out a call for other people to place orders soon.

Pima's Daisy First Cookie Booth Program

Pima has a program that pairs Daisy Girl Scouts and Daisy Parents with an older troop for their first cookie booth experience.  Here are the rules:

    • The expectation is that girls will attend for about 15 minutes to get just a taste of what it is like.
    • Last year, girls chose to stay longer, and that is up to you when you are there.
    • A registered parent must attend with their Daisy.
    • Girls should come in uniform (white shirt, black bottoms, vest).
    • Daisies will receive a patch for attendance.
Please note, if you open up your booth to Daisies, you must still adhere to cookie booth staffing guidelines. No more than FOUR girls at a booth at any time.  Troops 2010 and 2256/4727 have opted to staff to a maximum of two older girls per booth to accommodate Daisy slots.

Once booth selections are set, we will set up a Sign Up Genius for Daisies to participate. The link will appear here in January.
