Pima Neighborhood Community Service Day

Leaders please attend so ratio is met; Girl Scouts only (ie.
no siblings please as room size is limited to GS girls
anticipated to attend). You are not required to stay for the full time.  You can work on a project and arrive/leave at your leisure.

Troops from neighborhoods other than Pima who are interested in participating may do so for a nominal fee of $1 per girl.  Please pre-register and make checks out to Pima Neighborhood. 

CURRENT SERVICE PROJECTS PLANNED FOR DAY:

 Making No-Sew Fleece Blankets (Part of Gold GS Project)
In conjunction with Caitlyn Lopez’s Gold Award Project that is supporting an animal shelter (Caitlyn will
have information on site and work with the girls to create the blankets)

 Making Bean Bags (Part of Silver GS Project)
In conjunction with Hannah Dempsey’s Silver Award Project that is supporting an arts/crafts supply
closet for special needs children (Hannah will work with the girls to put these together and will have
information about her project)

 Coloring/creating place mats for donation to Meals on Wheels Organization

 Make Animal Enrichment items with a Halloween theme for the Phoenix Zoo. Items range from
painted paper bags (easy= Daisy) to paper mache pinata’s (moderate to difficult= Junior and up maybe?) Zoo
will receive items and put animal’s favorite snacks in them and give them to the animals as enrichment items.

 Make/assemble Animal toy for shelter (tennis ball with braid t-shirt material attachment)

 Card Making/Note writing = front line responders and families in shelters in areas affected by the natural
disasters/hurricanes

 Sock Drive/Collection for Family Promise Hygiene Kits
Troop 2010 is collecting NEW socks to donate to Family Promise’s event Hot Dogs and Homeless Kits.
We will be collecting at service day and the next neighborhood meeting on October 2nd

 As you can imagine, the zoo is pretty specific and particular about what can be used for the safety of the animals. 

We can use about: 

•       100 lunch bags 
•        50 small boxes (shoe size) 
•        20 large boxes (banana/apple box) 
•        20 egg cartons 
•       20 paper Jack-O-Lanterns
•       NEWSPAPERS

Additional Items for making animal piñatas:  

◾On Cardboard or thick paper boxes

All staples, tape, string, glue and glossy paper must be removed

◾Paper bags, butcher paper, newsprint, paper plates  

Again, no tape or glossy paper

◾Paper towels rolls, mailing tubes, wrapping paper tubes.

◾Elmer’s or Children’s White Glue – children’s non-toxic

◾Tempera Paint  - children’s non-toxic

◾Raffia string/ribbon – untreated or dyed

Leader Meeting Dates for 2018-2019

Mark your calendars to attend the monthly neighborhood meetings at the Boys and Girls Clubs located at 10515 E. Lakeview Drive, Scottsdale AZ 85258. You may attend either the 10 am meeting or the 7 pm meeting.

10-11 am and 7-8 pm on these Mondays:

• August 27
• October 1
• November 5
• December 3
• January 14
• February 4
• March 4
• May 6

You can also mark your calendar for the following special leader meetings:

• October 29 -- Cookie training to be held at the same location, also at either 10 am or 6:30 pm. It is highly recommended that the cookie manager AND the cookie mom attend.
• April 1 -- Leader's Gala and Recognition Event, 6:30 pm, location to be announced

Financial Reports due May 31

In a effort to streamline Financial Reports this year, Council is requesting that all Financial Reports be completed on line.  To do this, you must log onto the Girl Scouts Arizona Cactus-Pines website and go to "My GS."  Once logged in, select "Volunteer Toolkit" and then "Finances."  The online form will then load to fill in.

The Financial Form (MS-23) can be found in "Forms Library."  It is not a mandatory requirement this year to complete your detailed cash summary or include your bank statement.  However, you should know all your income and expenses for this current year;  random audits will occur.  Please keep copy of your MS-23 and your bank statement.  I will accept hard copies to submit should you feel more comfortable. Stacy and I will be receiving a report from council of Troop reports filed and not filed. 

Troop Finance reporting is a condition of auditing and must occur yearly.  Due dates for Troop Finance Reports should be turned in at time of troop renewal.  GSACPC is requesting all reports must be submitted to them by September.  

I strongly suggest that you complete your MS-23 by end of May.  It is the completion of your Girl Scout Year, and your year's accomplishments are fresh in your mind.

Back to School Ice Skating 2017

Come one, come all to the annual back to school ice skating event.  This is a great event to invite potential new Girl Scouts to attend!  Each troop should have at least one adult in attendance (adults generally sit in the lobby and socialize).  Collectively we will then have enough leaders to meet ratio guidelines.

When: August 26
Arrival Time: 5:45
Skate Time: 6:15-8:15
Where: Ice Den,  9375 E. Bell Road
Cost: $6 (includes skate rental)

Siblings may attend as well, since this is a public skate but parents are responsible for their supervision.

If you have a Girl Scout t-shirt, wear it to the skating rink!

Please drop a note to pima.neighborhood@gmail.com with a guess on attendance and also let me know if you are interested in me ordering participation patches.  Cost will be $1.  

Patches must be ordered and paid for at the Ice Den.  If you are not doing troop orders for patches, please convey to your parents that they have to find Diana in order to order and pay for and get a patch!  Patches will be ordered AFTER the event and delivered at the leader's meeting.

Girl Scout Sleepover at Chase Field

Come enjoy a fun and exciting opportunity with your fellow Girl Scouts for a sleepover at Chase Field! Before the game, walk on the warning track with your troop in our Girl Scout Parade and get a free D-backs Girl Scout patch!  Details about the night will be emailed when orders are received.

Leader's Awards 2017

Lee Kline and Diana Laulainen-Schein were each awarded the Girl Scout Appreciation Pin at the volunteer appreciation tea on April 22, 2017.
