October Service Project: Troop Volunteer Needed

The Pumpkin Project: October Service Project

We are looking for a troop to sponsor this project. Our suggested date is September 25th and location is Scottsdale Ranch Park (sponsoring troop can make the final decision). The pumpkin project consists of decorating pumpkins and then distributing them to local retirement homes, hospitals, and other locations. There will be a cost to cover the pumpkins and painting supplies, so I suggest a charge of $5 per person. Payment should be made to neighborhood by check or venmo Diana (in roster).

September Service Project: Caitlin's Smiles

November Hike: Granite Mountain Trailhead

When:
November 13th, 9:30 am

What: This month we're going to stroll near Pinnacle Peak. Start at the Granite Mountain Trailhead, wander down the Bootlegger trail, jog left a couple of times, then head straight back on Powerline Road.- this makes a 1.9-mile loop with ~200ft elevation change. Generally considered a moderately challenging route, it takes an average of 41 min to complete. This is a very popular area for birding, hiking, and mountain biking, so you'll likely encounter other people while exploring.  We'll have maps at the trailhead.

Remember your closed-toe shoes, sunscreen, and water.

October Hike: Tom's Thumb

When
: October 15, 8 to 8:30 am start

Where: Tom's Thumb Trailhead

Come out and stretch your legs in the beautiful Arizona desert! This month we will be visiting the Tom's Thumb trailhead in north Scottsdale and walking in a nice little Girl-Made loop trail,  You'll start by hiking a small part of Toms Thumb, then cut over to Mesquite Canyon trail. From there they would get on to the tail end of Feldspar Trail and go to the Caballo Trail, which links back to where we started at the trail head. The trails are well marked. Maps will be provided upon arrival.

This loop is about 1.5 miles with ~150 ft elevation gain.

September Badge Hike

When: September 24, 8:15 to 8:45 meeting time.

What: Bajada Nature Trail and Brownie Hiker Badge - The Nature Trail is 0.5 miles.

"Bajada Nature Trails a wonderful half-mile interpretive loop close to the Sabina Recreation Visitor Center in McDowell Sonoran Preserve. With no elevation gain, plenty of signage to help you identify all of the desert flora, and ADA accessibility, this is an excellent hike for anyone.

This is located off the Gateway trailhead, McDowell Sonoran Conservancy.  Meet at the trailhead from 8:15-8:45. Girls will complete parts 1, 2, and 5 of the Hiker Badge. Do #3 (learn about gear for hikes) and #4 (plan a hiking snack) ahead of time and they'll earn the whole badge!

If you want a little longer walk, you can then take the Horseshoe Loop (1.7 mi, very low elevation gain) at the same trailhead.
