Vista del Camino’s Adopt-a-Family Program

Pima has been participating in Vista del Camino’s Adopt-a-Family Program for 20+ years and generally adopts 50-75 Scottsdale children each holiday season.

The Adopt-a-Family event is a partnership between City of Scottsdale and Scottsdale Community Partners, the non-profit philanthropy arm of COS. Families are interviewed by social workers, who record children’s requests for three gifts for the holiday as well as clothing and shoe sizes.  Susan Vargas matches up adopters and adoptees and emails assignments and full information in mid-November.  Every effort is made to match troops with a child near their age.

Then, we purchase at least three gifts of around $100 in total value for each recipient based on their wish list.  We also provide a gift certificate for $30 to the family’s grocery store to help provide a holiday meal.  Troops frequently supplement the three main gifts with clothing, stocking stuffers, or other items, and sometimes also include a small gift for the mom or parents.  Many troops also include gift wrap, bows, and tape for the families to wrap the gifts with. All gifts are given to the families unwrapped, so the parents can have the pleasure and dignity of wrapping their own children’s gift.

Normally, it takes two or more troops to sponsor all the children in each family.  This year, for the first time, we will ask the troops to work together to deliver all the gifts for a family together at one time to Vista del Camino (rather than taking them to Holly's house as in the past). We drop off a donor report and all the gifts, bagged and labelled for each recipient in mid-December to Vista del Camino.

Thank you for making a child's holiday special!

Join Robotics

Calling all girls, grades 6 to 12, to join our new robotics team. The following video shows you the challenge for this year's competition, and the list at the end of this post outlines our "needs."

If you're interested, we have the the "standard kit" to get started but we are in need of all the other "parts." If you want to be a part of this exciting new venture, sign up here: https://forms.gle/YL4ntD9y4s5fWRg16

If you are an adult and want to join this venture as a coach (not a Girl Scout? We'll buy your membership!), have a location available for a robotics lab (we will provide insurance), or can help secure sponsors, please email pima.neighborhood@gmail.com

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

From https://www.firstinspires.org/robotics/frc/start-a-team

FIRST Robotics Competition gives high school students and their adult mentors the opportunity to work and create together to solve a common problem. Teams of students are challenged to design, build, and program robots and compete for awards, while they also create a team identity, raise funds, hone teamwork skills, and advance respect and appreciation for STEM within the local community.

Beyond game play itself, students are rewarded by team achievements – in robot design and programming, demonstrating community outreach, Gracious Professionalism®, and the ability to overcome obstacles. Winning is always secondary to the quality of the overall experience.

What does every FIRST Robotics Competition team need?

  • 2 or more adult Mentors with both technical and non-technical expertise willing and motivated to “coach” the team through the build and competition season (and beyond)
  • 10 or more high school-aged students willing to put in time after school (and maybe some weekends) and to do any job the team needs to succeed (lots of jobs available for all skill levels and interests)
  • Suitable in-person meeting location
  • A standard kit of parts and a common set of rules issued by FIRST
  • A community sponsor(s) that will help fund your efforts and provide other support
  • The desire to learn, explore, strategize, build comradery, share ideas and talents, make new friends, be inclusive, and HAVE FUN!
