October Community Service: Birthday Bags & Toy Drive

Arizona Helping Hands provides essential needs for children in foster care. https://azhelpinghands.org The organization receives more than 300 requests a month for birthday bags. As Girl Scouts celebrate Juliette Low’s birthday (October 31^st 1860) let’s make a birthday special for a child in need.  

Reminder: many of these items can be found at the dollar store. If you would like to also add small gifts to the bags, they are particularly in need of gifts for tweens and teens. Materials: 

1.Plain gift bag that the girls can decorate 

1.tissue paper 

1.cake mix 

1.frosting 

1.cake pan 

1. box of candles 

1. roll of streamers  

1. package of balloons 

Toy(s) of your choice can be donated but should not be included in the bag.

 

Instructions: 

We will host a Zoom call to decorate bags and assemble on Sunday October 18^th at 2 p.m. You can organize the bags with your troop at your convenience. The Zoom call is optional but is a fun way to interact with other troops.

First Outdoor Adventure

When:  Saturday,October 24 at 6:30 to 8:00 am

Who: Girl Scouts and their families

What: Nature hike 

Where: 18333 N Thompson Peak Pkwy, Scottsdale, AZ 85260 

Why: To educate you on your surroundings when hiking any trail in the area

Please remember to wear closed-toed shoes and bring lots of water; it is
forecast to be 82 degrees that day.

Scholarships and College Planning for Girl Scouts

Staying in Girl Scouts can help you build your college resume and improves your eligibility for many scholarships. Activities done through Girl Scouts (not just by earning your Gold Award) can be the foundation when applying for many scholarships.

Scholarships

Scholarships are available on multiple levels within Girl Scouts. Our neighborhood sponsors a grant for service and the council offers scholarships to Gold Award recipients.  

Applications for council scholarships are sent to all girls after they have earned their Gold Award.  Council has also compiled a list of scholarships available to all girls here.

Nationwide, hundreds of schools and organizations offer scholarships to Girl Scouts.  There is a searchable list on the GSUSA website.  

ASU and U of A

• ASU College of Engineering - girls must be accepted to ASU and can apply through their scholarship portal
• U of A or ASU Honors Colleges - girls must be accepted to an applicable Honors College and apply through the respective schools' scholarship portal

Assistance with College Planning

Girl Scouts also provides free access to CollegeLab is offering free access to registered Girl Scouts who have met one or more of the following requirements:

• Earned (or currently earning) the College Knowledge badge
• Secured council approval of their Gold Award proposal
• Earned the Girl Scout Gold Award

Leadership Opportunities for Older Girls

We are excited to offer some great ways for our Cadette, Senior, and Ambassador Girl Scouts to be part of the Girl Scout leadership and service team!  

This is a great way to give service and build your leadership skills while helping make Girl Scouts strong.

Service team
There are at-large positions available on the service team. We expect you to attend monthlyleader meetings (evenings) and use your voice.  We encourage you to consider one of the following teams.

Community Service Team
The community service team will plan and carry out or work with troops carrying out neighborhood-wide service projects.   Projects are monthly.   Team meetings will be a couple of times a year, plus emails and working via Google spreadsheet. Find out more here.

STEM Team

The STEM team will plan neighborhood-wide STEM activities, including but not limited to robotics and general science activities.  Eventually, the neighborhood would like to have its own robotics teams through First Tech Challenge.  Bring your ideas and your science, math, and technology passions to this team!

Recruitment Team

Do you love Girl Scouts and think every girl should join? Then the recruitment team is the job for you. Read more about this team here.

Outdoor Events Team
Girls on this team will plan and carry out neighborhood-wide outdoor activities. Meetings will be monthly and there are many activities in the works including monthly hikes, bicycle rides, outdoor skills, letter boxing, and astronomy.  

Book Club (Daisy, Brownie, Junior, Cadette levels)
There are opportunities to help lead book club for the younger girls. Find out more here, and sign up.

STEM Activities: Robotics Programs in Pima

The HYSA Howlers are teaming up with girls on the Pima STEM team to offer robotics workshops on demand. Please sign up here and tell the Howlers which badge you'd like them to work on with your troop and when.

Fall Product Sale Information 2020

The Fall Product Sale is coming soon, beginning October 1.  This is a great way to earn money for your troop and for the girls to start setting goals and reaching them!  Your troop can earn $1-$2 per product.  If your troop sells $600 of Fall Products by 10/26, you will earn an early Cookie Booth selection!

Your customers can purchase delicious snacks, nuts, and chocolate.  These make great holiday gifts.  Favorite include Fruit Slices, Thin Mint Almonds, and Dark Chocolate Mint Penguins.  New this year: Peanut Butter Trail Mix.  There are even more options online which can be direct shipped to customers. 

Training and Program Packets

If your troop is participating, please have the Fall Product Manager (or troop leader) complete the online training.  Beginning Friday Aug. 21, Fall Product managers and leaders can go through the online training on GSLearn, and at the end you will electronically sign a TPM agreement which gives you access to the online ordering system, M2.  The online system is new this year but the products are still coming from Ashdon Farms.  

• Come pick up your packets from my porch.  They are in large white envelopes labeled with a number indicating how many packets are inside.  Pick up as many as you need to cover the number of girls in your troop.

• Go through the “Managing the 2020 Fall Product Program” training.
• Fill out the 2020 TPM Agreement.
• You can access the M2 system on September 24 once you receive your launch email.  Take some time to familiarize yourself with the site before the sale starts on 10/1 and parents & girls can log in.

Important Dates:

• September 24:             Troop leaders receive launch email to set up their troop sites
• October 1:                   Sale begins; parents receive link to set up site for online sales
• October 26:                 Orders forms and girl delivery order due
• November 21-22:        Product delivered and ready for pick up
• November 30:             Online sales end
